Massachusetts Residential Solar Thermal Incentives

The Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Pilot Program is a new program of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) that provides rebates for installation of residential solar hot water systems. Commonwealth Solar Hot Water rebates are available to electricity customers served by the following Massachusetts investor-owned electric utilities in Spirit Solar's service territory:

  • National Grid
  • NSTAR Electric
  • Western Massachusetts Electric

Customers the following municipal lighting plant utilities are also eligible:

  • Asburnham
  • Holden
  • Holyoke
  • Russell
  • Templeton

Rebate Incentive Amounts

  • $25*SRCC rating in kbtu/panel/day (Category C, Mildly Cloudy Day)
  • Additional $200/system for systems with parts manufactured in Massachusett.
  • Maximum incentive of $3,500 per building or 25% of total installed costs

State Tax Credit

15% of total project cost or a cap of $1,000. can be carried over up to three years. Read more.

Federal Tax Credit

30% credit for solar water heaters placed in service after 12/31/2008 with no maximum. Read more.

Spirit Solar will provide full service to obtain all necessary permits and rebates as part of your project. Please contact a tax professional about qualification for any state or federal tax credits.

What is SRCC?

In 1980 the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) was incorporated as a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is the development and implementation of certification programs and national rating standards for solar energy equipment. SRCC tests and certifies solar thermal collectors.

What is a kBTU?

A BTU, short for British Thermal Unit, is a basic measure of thermal (heat) energy. One BTU is the amount of energy needed to heat one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit. The higher the BTU output, the more powerful the heating or cooling system. A kBTU is 1,000 BTUs.
